I love nothing more than playing with words and crafting engaging content, and I feel very lucky to have forged a career in communications spanning more than 14 years – and still counting! But, where did it all begin?

Maybe it was the excitement, at the age of around 8 or 9, of seeing my pithy 5-line poem on butterflies published in a paperback anthology. Or perhaps it was reading interviews with my latest celebrity crush in glossy mags like Bliss and Smash Hits, and often thinking to myself, ‘I could totally write something like that!’. Surely every teenage girl’s dream, right?

I confess though; I can’t recall that one eureka ‘I want to write for a living’ moment.

In fact, I ended up studying geography at Newcastle University, and not English as you might expect from a budding writer. Cue many fun-filled field trips to blustery Northumberland to wade through rivers and peat bogs while donning my favourite pair of wellies.

I really enjoyed my degree course (who doesn’t love collecting rock samples?) but I enjoyed my extracurricular activities with the student radio station and newspaper much more.

A magazine journalism qualification soon followed, and since 2007 my career path has included a variety of exciting comms roles within publishing, higher education, the charity sector, and arts and culture.

Writing has always been ‘my thing’. So here I am, still in Newcastle all these years later (am I an adopted Geordie yet?!) and now a full-time copywriter by day, and a freelance writer-come-blogger-come-Instagrammer by night.

I’m open to freelance commissions – keep scrolling for everything you need to know about my expertise.

Where you’ll find my words

I’m passionate about telling stories and creating inspiring yet relatable lifestyle content that entertains and informs readers across print and online platforms. This encompasses:

Blog posts
Press releases
Brochures and other marketing collateral

And a few more things…

My other specialities include sub-editing and proofreading.

I’ve also interviewed people from all sorts of industries, such as entertainment, hospitality, retail, finance, and sport, plus a sprinkling of celebrities along the way.

I’d say that conducting a coherent telephone interview with comedian Lucy Porter whilst gracefully perched on a kerb – complete with Metro trains clattering past in the background – counts as one of my more memorable accomplishments.

As for interviewing SHOW Beauty founder Tamara Ecclestone, then catching her young daughter ‘playing’ with my dictaphone just as I was wrapping up my last question – this was, by contrast, one of those heart-stopping ‘I-wish-I’d-stuck-it-out-with-shorthand’ moments!
